+ Can EMD handle my emergency situations?

EYEmergencyMD is designed to handle non-emergent medical problems. You should NOT use the mobile app or webpage if you are experiencing a medical emergency. Your local emergency room may participate with our service and can facilitate an encounter with one of our ophthalmologists in the appropriate environment.

+ Can I use it for my family?

We would love to have you refer us to your family and friends. Each family member or friend must establish their own personal account on the mobile app or webpage to use the service.

+ Is my electronic health record kept private?

Health records are kept totally private and we employ robust encryption methods to protect your personal information. You determine who can see the information in your record.

+ Can I be turned down for a pre-existing condition?

We do not turn patients away because of pre-existing conditions.

+ Can I be seen by a doctor if I am traveling in another state?

Yes. EMD has physician coverage in all 50 states and 2 US territories, so rest assured that we have you covered wherever you are. Please be sure to identify the state where you currently are in your registration process.

+ Can I call EYEmergencyMD outside of the United States?

EMD visits are available outside of the United States. However, some functionalities may be limited by reduced internet connectivity.

+ How do I access the service?

A consult with an EMD ophthalmologist may be initiated through the mobile app or via the website. If your local urgent care or emergency room participates with our service, you may also consult with one of our board certified ophthalmologists there.

+ How long will it take for the physician to respond to my visit request?

Your sight is precious. EMD prides itself on timely attention to each and every consult request we receive. It is our goal and guarantee that each consult will be initiated with 15 minutes of receipt.

+ If my condition requires immediate attention, how will I be notified?

If the level of acuity of your condition is above the level that a remote visit will address, your EMD ophthalmologist will facilitate a transfer to your local emergency room and speak to a physician there about your condition. You will be given clear instructions by our patient care coordinator on the next steps to take.

+ Are there dermatology conditions not treated by EYEmergencyMD?

The EMD ophthalmologist will determine treatment options based on the visit.

+ Can a visit be scheduled for someone under the age of 18?

EMD visits are available to all regardless of age.

+ Do I have to have online access to have a EMD visit?

Yes. All of our visits are conducted through a secure web portal. Telephone only visits may be conducted in rare cases.

+ Can my eye problem actually be diagnosed and treated remotely?

Yes! With a thorough history of your problem, clear video and still photos, and an exam facilitated by the EMD ophthalmologist, assisted by you, a family member, or a specially trained technician in urgent cares and emergency rooms, the necessary information can be acquired and a diagnosis and treatment plan made with confidence.

+ Is there a monthly charge to use your service?

Your credit or debit card will never be charged a monthly service fee. With EMD, you are only charged if you consult with one of our doctors.

+ What if I just have a question for the doctor?

No problem. We are here for whatever issue or question you may have about your eyes. Whether it is education or treatment you need, our doctors will provide you with the same exceptional level of care and service.

+ Can I get a work excuse if I see the doctor?

Yes. If your EMD doctor will provide all necessary documentation for your visit.

+ Do I need to schedule an appointment to see a doctor?

+ Why do I have to fill out intake questions?

In order to make sure our providers have the best information possible to assist our patients, we do require a short intake with specific questions about your past medical and eye problems.

The cost of an EYEmergencyMD consultation is $75. There are no monthly fees involved.

+ Will I be charged more at night, on weekends, or holidays?

No. The cost of a visit with an EMD physician is $75 any time of the day 24/7/265.

+ How long will the visit take?

Your visit will last about 15 minutes.

+ Do I talk to “real doctors”?

Yes. EYEmergencyMD patients only talk to board certified ophthalmologists who licensed to practice medicine in the U.S. When you request a consult, EMD will connect you with a doctor licensed in your state.

+ Can I request a particular doctor?

You cannot request a particular doctor. EMD is designed to support your relationship with your existing primary eye care provider or help you establish a relationship with one. It is not a means of establishing an exclusive relationship with one of our ophthalmologists. All EMD ophthalmologists are board-certified, state-licensed and go through rigorous training and credentialing.

+ Can I get a prescription?

EMD does not guarantee a prescription with every visit. It is up to the doctor to recommend the best treatment. EMD doctors do not issue prescriptions for substances controlled by the DEA, non-therapeutic, and/or certain other drugs which may be harmful because of their potential for abuse.

+ Do I have to upload an image?

If you have images you would like to share with the ophthalmologist prior to the start of the consult, they may be uploaded during the registration process. There is an option of having a video consolation with the doctor which will allow him or her to see the problem real time.

+ What types of images are allowed?

Acceptable image file types: JPEG, GIF, PNG, 15MB max per image

+ Are there a maximum number of images I can upload?

EMD allows up to five images to be stored per visit.

+ Will I be speaking with a licensed eye care provider?

All EMD providers are US licensed, board certified ophthalmologists. This means that they have completed 4 years of medical school to become a medical doctor and an additional 4-6 years of specialized ophthalmic training in medical and surgical care of all eye conditions. Our providers are at the highest level an eye physician can achieve. We would not trust your sight to anything less.

+ Can I address more than one condition when I request a visit with an EMD physician?

EMD does ask that you limit request for a visit to one medical condition.

After Care:

+ Can I ask follow up questions?

Follow-up questions will require a new consultation to be initiated. Complete instructions for care and recommended follow up will be forward to you after each consult is completed.

+ If I am given a prescription as a result of my visit, how will I be notified?

Prescriptions will be handled immediately after the consult is ended. You will receive an email from EMD confirming that your prescription has been sent to the pharmacy of your choice. You may then follow up with your to determine processing time.

+ How are prescriptions sent to the pharmacy?

EMD does not dispense prescription drugs. If the doctor prescribes medication, it is submitted electronically or by phone to the pharmacy of your choice.

+ What can be shared with PCPs?

We do not share EMD medical record unless specifically asked for by the member. There may be a charge for paper copies if these are required.
